Note 1. Until 1972 the Ulster Unionist party functioned as the Northern Ireland arm of the Conservative party, and Ulster Unionist seats won in elections before that date are included in the Conservative total.
Note 2. The Social Democratic party was formed in 1982 mainly by defectors from the Labour party. It fought the elections of 1983 and 1987 in partnership with the Liberal party known as the Alliance. The two parties amalgamated in 1988 to form the Social and Liberal Democrats becoming simply the Liberal Democrats in 1989.
Note 3. The Scottish National Party was formed in 1933 as a merger of the National Party of Scotland (founded 1928) and the Scottish Party (founded 1930). Though it won a by-election in 1945, it did not win a seat in a general election till 1970.
Note 4. Plaid Cymru is the Welsh Nationalist Party and was founded in 1925
Note 5. The Protestant Unionist party was founded by Ian Paisley in 1964, but in 1971 it was replaced by the Democratic Unionist party which was also led by Ian Paisley.
Note 6. The Vanguard Ulster Progressive party was formed in 1973 by defectors fronm the Ulster Unionist party. It split in 1975, the majority rejoining the Ulster Unionist party and a minority forming the United Ulster Unionist party which ceased to exist in 1983.
Note 7. The Republican Labour party was founded in 1964. However the party's only MP was one of the co-founders of the Social Democratic and Labour party in 1970 and most of the Republican Labour party members joined the the new party.
Note 8. Sinn Fein (We Ourselves) was founded in 1905 but first contested elections in 1917. Most of its memebership left in the 1920's to form other parties to contest elections in the (then) Irish Free State. In 1970 the remnant split into the "Officials" which became the workers Party and the "Provisionals" which retained the name "Sinn Fein".
Note 9. The Conservative government resigned on March 4 and was replaced by a minority Labour government.
Note 10. The Labour government resigned on May 11 and was succeeded by a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government which had a majority of 77
Note 11. the Liberal National party was formed in October 1931 by those Liberals who wished to fully support the Conservative-dominated National government. They remained in the government when the other Liberals left in 1932. In 1947 they combined with the Conservatives though a number of MPs used both Conservative and Liberal National labels till 1966.
Note 12. Many of the Liberals who were not officially Coalition candidates in 1918 in fact supported the government though opposition grew as time went on. The Liberals who supported the coalition of 1916-22 fought the 1922 election as National Liberals under Lloyd George. The party reunited under Asquith to fight the 1923 election.
Note 13. the National Labour Party was formed in 1931 by those Labour MPs who decided to support the National government. It wound itself up just before the 1945 general election.
Note 14. The I.L.P. was affiliated to the Labour Party till 1932 and its MPs are included in the Labour Party figures before that date.
Note 15. Constitutionalist was a name adopted by a number of former Liberals. It was not the name of a political party.
Note 16. National was the label adopted by MPs who supported the National government of 1931-40 but did not join any of the political parties.
Note 17. The Irish Nationalists were very loosely organised after the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922. They disappeared from the political scene after 1973, their support having drifted away to the SDLP - see note 7.
Note 18. The Labour Unionists represented Belfast constituencies and were effectively non-Coalition Conservatives.
Note 19. The National Democratic Party was formed in 1915 and joined by Labour members who supported the continuation of the coalition. It ceased to exist in 1921. Its sitting MPs contested the 1922 election as National Liberals.
Note 20. Before 1950 the Speaker stood as a party candidate and is included in the relevant party's total.
Note 21. The Conservative government resigned on 4 June and a minority Labour government took office the following day.
Note 22.The National majority includes Conservatives, Liberal Nationals, National Labour and Nationals in both 1931 and 1935. It includes Liberals only in 1931.
Note 23. The Liberal Unionist party was formed in 1886 by Liberals who disagreed with their party's policy on Irish Home Rule. They co-operated with the Conservatives and over the years many MPs were jointly sponsored so the distinction between the two can only be approximate. The Liberal Unionists formally amalgamated with the Conservatives in 1912.
Note 24. The Labour Party was founded in 1900 as the Labour Representation Committee, becoming the Labour party in 1906.
Note 25. The Home Rule League was founded in 1873, but was loosely organised in parliament. Charles Parnell, who became chairman in 1880 established a far more coherent and disciplined party which became the Irish Parliamentary Party. Those who accepted Parnell's leadership in 1880 are classed as Irish Nationalists, the rest as Home Rulers.
Note 26. The Irish Nationalists split in 1890 due to Parnell's divorce case. The main party was often described as Anti-Parnellites to distinguish then from the minority who supported Parnell (the Parnellites). They re-united in 1900.
Note 27. The Crofters were sponsored by the Land league formed in 1882. They stood as Liberal Unionists in 1886.
Note 28. The Conservative majority includes the Liberal Unionists who always supported the government (see note 23). Without Liberal Unionist support, there would be no majority for any party.
Note 29. The Liberals had an effective majority of 44 as the Irish Nationalists and the Independents supported them on major issues.
Note 30. The Conservative majority includes the Liberal Unionists who joined the Consevatives in government (see note 23).
Note 31. The Liberal government had an effective majority of 124 in January 1910 and 126 in Decemeber 1910 due to the support of Labour and the Irish Nationalists on crucial issues.
